T-Yanks Record 14th Shutout of 2010

Tampa, Fla. - A pitcher's duel last night at George M. Steinbrenner field gave the Tampa Yankees (19-11) a win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (14-19) snapping their five game winning streak. The Tampa Yankees recorded a 3-0 shutout win with solid pitching and defense. Dueling on the mound for the Yankees was Dellin Betances (5-1, 1.41 ERA) and for the Stone Crabs: Matthew Moore (4-9, 4.05 ERA).

Betances kept the Stone Crabs off the scoreboard through the first six innings, but Moore was up to the challenge throwing 7 shutout innings of his own.

In the top of the seventh, the Yankees put in Pat Venditte to replace Betances. Betances finished with a total of six innings pitched, giving up four hits, walking two, and striking out five.

After seven complete innings the score remained tied 0-0. The Stone Crabs replaced Moore who threw seven innings, striking out ten, walking one and giving up one hit with Zachary Quate. Zoilo Almonte greeted the new pitcher with his first triple of the season. Myron Leslie walked, followed by a Mitch Abeita single to left which scored Almonte and moved Leslie to second. Leslie advanced to third on a fly out from Trent Lockwood and scored on a Ray Kruml bunt single. A wild pitch advanced Kruml and Abeita to second and third with one out. Jose Pirela hit a sacrifice fly and brought Abeita home giving the T-Yanks a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the ninth, the Tampa Yankees brought in Jonathan Ortiz to close. Venditte (2-0, 1.67 ERA) picked up the win by pitching a solid two innings giving up only one hit and striking out four. Oritz recorded his 18th save of the season and finished the game giving up two hits and no runs. For Charlotte, Quate(2-2, 1.20 ERA) gets the loss and finished with one inning pitched, giving up three hits, and three earned runs.

The teams return to George M. Steinbrenner Field tonight for game three of the four game series with the first pitch at 7pm and the gates opening at 6 pm. It's Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark with drink specials including $1 draft, $2 bottles, and $1 sodas.
