Jordan Montgomery Gets Call to Tampa Yankees

Lefty heads to High-A after earning SAL Pitcher of the Week honor, Marsh and Wotherspoon to join RiverDogs

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The New York Yankees announced that left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery has been promoted to the High-A Tampa Yankees and that right-handed pitcher Sean Carley has been sent to Extended Spring Training. In addition to the two players leaving, the Yankees announced that pitchers Matt Marsh and Matt Wotherspoon have been added to the RiverDogs roster.

Montgomery, 22, was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Carolina. In nine appearances with the RiverDogs, Montgomery went 4-3 with a 2.68 ERA allowing just 15 runs, 13 earned, on 36 hits in 43 2/3 innings pitched; he walked 12 and struck out a team-high 55 batters.

The Sumter, S.C. native was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for games played May 18 - May 24. For the week, Montgomery went 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA in two games started with one earned run allowed on four hits, he did not walk anyone and struck out 15 across 11.1 innings. He delivered a career-high seven scoreless innings against the Greenville Drive on May 23, in which he allowed just two hits and struck out eight.

Carley, 24, was 0-1 with a 6.45 ERA across 15 appearances out of the Charleston bullpen. In 22 1/3 innings he allowed 21 runs, 16 earned, on 35 hits; he walked nine, struck out 20, and was tied for the team lead in home runs allowed with four. The righty was selected by the Yankees in the 14th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the West Virginia University.

Marsh, 23, was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in June 2014. In 17 professional appearances the righty has compiled a 1-1 record with a 2.25 ERA. The former Liberty Flame made five appearances with the Tampa Yankees in 2015. He went 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits across 13 1/3 innings; he walked three and struck out 12.

Wotherspoon, 23, was selected by the Yankees in the 34th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh, where he was teammates with current RiverDog Joe Harvey. The Mountain Top, PA native has compiled a 3-3 record with a 2.55 ERA in 23 minor-league games. In 2015, Wotherspoon has pitched for both the Tampa Yankees and Double-A Trenton Thunder. He is 1-0 with a 3.63 ERA in 6 appearances across the two levels.
