Haviland, Ports combine on one-hitter
Haviland (7-6) struck out eight and walked two in seven innings, allowing the lone hit -- a solo home run to first baseman Cody Decker in the second frame -- and the 'pen took care of the rest.
Stockton's Scott Deal hit the first batter he faced to lead off the top of the eighth inning, and a wild pitch and a walk put runners on first and second with nobody out. But closer Paul Smyth worked out of a bases-loaded jam after an intentional walk to keep the Ports' lead intact.
Smyth walked Allan Dykstra with one out in the ninth, then struck out Jesus Lopez and Adam Zornes to seal his 17th save.
The victory gave Haviland his first win in six weeks, following a rough spell for the 24-year-old in which he lost three consecutive games and didn't get a decision in three others. It was the fourth time this year he's worked a season-high seven frames.
The save was Smyth's sixth two-inning save of the year and his first since a 12-inning victory over Modesto on July 12.
Grant Green delivered an RBI single in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. He's batting .375 (21-for-56) with five doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs over that span.
