Reno's rally comes up short in extra innings

June 5, 2015

RENO - A valiant comeback effort fell short for the Reno Aces (@Aces) in a 6-5 loss to the Round Rock Express on Friday night in ten innings at Aces Ballpark.

The Aces scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to even the game at 5-5 and send it to extra innings. Down 5-2, Danny Dorn started the ninth with a single to right-field off reliever Roman Mendez.

Two batters later, Mike Freeman (@MikeBFree5) doubled to the gap in left-center to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Danny Worth. He kept the inning going with a two-strike base hit up the middle to drive home both Dorn and Freeman to draw the Aces within 5-4.

Catcher Blake Lalli (@BlakeLalli) then followed with another base hit, putting Worth at second. Mendez left the game with an injury and the Express turned to left-hander Alex Claudio to face left-handed hitting Nick Buss (@chilibuss). Aces Manager Phil Nevin countered by replacing Buss with pinch-hitter Garrett Weber (@_weber5) who lined the first pitch he saw into left for a base hit to load the bases.

Jake Lamb (@JakeLamb18) came up next and took a 3-2 pitch for a ball to force in Worth with the tying run. With the potential winning run at third and still only one out, Claudio buckled down and struck out Peter O'Brien for the second out, and retired Nick Evans on a groundout.

Reno brought in right-hander Kevin Munson (@GOTMUNEY) for the top of the tenth. On an 0-2 pitch, third baseman Chris Gimenez hit a solo home run to give Round Rock a 6-5 lead. It was the fourth home run of the season for the former Nevada Wolf Pack player.

Claudio came out for the bottom of the tenth and retired the side in order to win it for the Express.

Edgar Garcia started for Reno and worked five innings in his Aces and Triple-A debut. Matt Stites (@matt_stites), Kaleb Fleck (@k_fleck) and Dan Runzler all worked in relief in front of Munson.

Worth paced the Aces with a huge night at the plate. The shortstop was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, 2 doubles and a run scored. Freeman had also had a multi-hit game - his 17th of the season.

The series wraps up Friday night at Aces Ballpark. Left-hander Justin Marks (3-4, 5.81) starts for Reno against right-hander Stolmy Pimentel (0-1, 10.13) for Round Rock. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
