Cubs Win Fourth Straight

Homers help Cubs beat RedHawks
August 2, 2010
Oklahoma City, OK (August 2, 2010) - The Iowa Cubs (62-47) overcame an early 3-1 deficit and came back to beat the Oklahoma City RedHawks (57-51) 5-3 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark tonight. The Cubs have won four straight games and are 8-2 on this road trip with one game left to play. With Memphis losing tonight, the Cubs lead in the Pacific Coast League's American Northern Division standings is now two and a half games.

The Cubs got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. Matt Camp drew a walk from RedHawks' starter Derek Holland to start the game. After stealing second, Camp scored on a two-out hit by Micah Hoffpauir for the game's first run.

The RedHawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Cubs' starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx. Esteban German led off with a single and Brandon Boggs walked. After a strikeout, Chris Davis doubled to drive in two and scored on a base hit by Max Ramirez. Those were the only runs Bibens-Dirkx (3-0) allowed through five innings of work and he would get the win.

The Cubs came back to take the lead in the top of the fourth inning. After a base hit by Hoffpauir, Jason Dubois launched a home run to left-center to tie the game at three. It was Dubois' 12th home run of the season. After a lineout and a groundout, Welington Castillo also connected on a homer off Holland, his 12th of the year, that put the Cubs ahead 4-3. Holland (5-2) worked through 4.2 innings as part of his Major League rehab assignment and got the loss.

The Cubs added their final run in the top of the fifth inning off Doug Mathis. With one out, Mathis hit Ty Wright with a pitch and Castillo followed with a double. Marquez Smith hit a ball back to the pitcher and the RedHawks had Wright caught up in a rundown. The Cubs ended up with a run when Mathis chased Wright back towards third base, but then couldn't get out of the way when Wright turned around and headed back towards home. The two made contact and Wright was awarded the plate on interference.

The Cubs got good work out of their bullpen to finish the game for Bibens-Dirkx. Jeff Gray pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and struck out three. After a pair of one-out walks in eighth, Scott Maine came in and got out of the jam to preserve the lead. David Cales retired the side in order in the ninth inning to earn his second save.

The Cubs and RedHawks wrap up this series tomorrow night at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. LH J.R. Mathes (8-7, 5.30) will start for the Cubs against LH Michael Kirkman (10-3, 3.07) for the RedHawks. The game is the final game of this 12-day road trip for the Cubs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:40.
