Sand Gnats Outlast Power on Wednesday

Charleston, WV - The Savannah Sand Gnats used a seven-run third inning to beat the West Virginia Power 8-6 on Wednesday at Appalachian Power Park. The Gnats have won eight straight games and 13 of their last 15. 

The Sand Gnats (32-27) started the scoring with a single run in the game's opening frame. SAL All-Star, Jonathan Johnson, reached first after being hit by a pitch. Johnson moved to second on a bunt from Luis Guillorme and scored on a throwing error by 1B Connor Joe. 

The Power (34-25) answered in the bottom of the second after Jerrick Suiter tripled to right. Suiter tied the game on a sacrifice fly from Chase Simpson. 

With the game tied, the Gnats plated seven runs in the third to take the lead for good. RF Wuilmer Becerra led off the inning by reaching first after a passed ball by catcher Taylor Gushue on a strike out. Eudor Garcia and Jon Leroux each singled to move and score Becerra. Tomas Nido doubled scoring Garcia. JC Rodriguez scored Leroux on a sacrifice fly. Back-to-back walks to Vicente Lupo and Johnson loaded the bases for Guillorme. Guillorme laced his first double of the night to left scoring Nido and Lupo. Becerra stepped to the plate for the second time in the inning and scored Johnson and Guillorme with a single. 

Trailing 8-1, the Power started chipping away at the seven-run Sand Gnat lead. Simpson launched a two-run homer off starter Casey Delgado (3-0) in the fourth scoring Suiter. Delgado earned his third straight victory in just his third appearance with Savannah. 

In the eighth, Michael Suchy hit the second homer for the Power in the game. Suchy's homer came off of reliever Ricky Knapp and scored Joe. 

The Power plated the final run of the game in the ninth on a triple from Jeff Roy giving the game its' 8-6 final score. 

LHP David Roseboom earned his team-high fifth save of the season after striking out the only batter he faced. 

The Sand Gnats will look for their second straight series sweep tomorrow at 7:05 PM. The Gnats will send RHP Martires Arias (3-3, 3.55) to the hill, while West Virginia will start RHP Alex McRae (2-4, 4.89) in the series finale.
