Matt Cain Joins the Sacramento River Cats

Giants' Veteran Righty to Make Rehab Start Monday, June 15
June 12, 2015

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Three-time World Series Champion and three-time All-Star Matt Cain is scheduled to start for the Sacramento River Cats this Monday, June 15, as a part of his Major League rehab assignment. The longtime San Francisco Giant will take the mound on Monday's homestand opener against the division rival Fresno Grizzlies.

Cain was placed on the disabled list by San Francisco for a strained right flexor tendon on April 7. Cain has not pitched in a major league game since July 9, 2014. Shortly after that start, Cain underwent surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow and missed the rest of the 2014 season and postseason run. He made a few Spring Training starts, but began feeling tightness in his elbow after his last start and was placed on the DL just before Opening Day.

The Giants drafted Cain in the first round (25th overall) of the 2002 amateur draft. He has made 280 starts for the Giants, and owns a career record of 95-95 with a 3.39 ERA. From 2007 to 2012, Cain pitched at least 200 innings, made at least 32 starts, and was named to the National League All-Star team three times ('09, '11, and '12). His most exciting moment as a Giant came on June 13, 2012 when he threw baseball's 22nd perfect game at AT&T Park against the Houston Astros. Cain tallied 14 strikeouts in the game, tied for the most strikeouts in a perfect game with Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cain's rehab assignment started this past Tuesday with Double-A Richmond. He threw 55 pitches in 3 2/3 innings while allowing two runs on three hits and a walk. He struck out two while pitching comfortably at 91 mph and topping out at 94. Prior to joining Richmond, Cain threw two simulated innings and faced live hitters in Arizona, throwing between 25-35 pitches in each outing. His rehab continues Monday with Sacramento as they host the Fresno Grizzlies, the former San Francisco Giants Triple-A affiliate and Cain's former Triple-A team. He pitched for the Grizzlies for one season, making 26 starts and posting a 10-5 record with a 4.39 ERA in 2005.

First pitch for Monday's game at Raley Field against the Fresno Grizzlies is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are still available. For more information, please call 916.371.HITS (4487) or visit rivercats.com.
