Dunedin Sweeps Doubleheader against Lakeland
DUNEDIN, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (28-34) swept Saturday's doubleheader from the Lakeland Flying Tigers (27-34) improving to 4-2 on the homestand.
During the twin bill, Dunedin recorded six doubles in game one and four triples in game two. L.B. Dantzler homered in the first game and Matt Dean smacked a walk-off homer in the second. J.D. Davis had three RBI doubles and a two highlight reel catches in left field. Roemon fields had a stolen base in each game of the double dip and has 20 steals on the year.
J.D. Davis and Roemon Fields combined to plate the first run during game one of the doubleheader. Fields reached on a dropped-third strike and later strolled in to third on a stolen base and an error. J.D. Davis then drove Fields in on a well-struck sacrifice fly to right. Fields has 19 stolen bases on the year which ranks fifth in the Florida State League.
Lakeland fought back in the second, plating three on a homer by Francisco Martinez. A half an inning later, the Jays bounced back when L.B. Dantlzer started a five-run rally by blasting a solo homer to right. Following his blast, Dawel Lugo doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly Jorge Saez. Dunedin recorded six hits in the frames, highlighted by RBI doubles from J.D. Davis and Mitch Nay after Dantzler's homer.
The Blue Jays weren't finished offensively, tacking on three runs in the fourth. Davis and Nay each recorded their second RBI double of the game, extending Dunedin's lead to 10-3.
Murphy Smith allowed three runs in the game, but they all came during the second inning. He walked one, struck out four and held Lakeland scoreless over this final three innings of work. He earned his fourth win of the year. Brady Dragmire finished the game for the Jays, tossing two innings of one-run baseball.
The Blue Jays matched a season high of six doubles in the first contest. Dawel Lugo, Mitch Nay, and J.D. Davis each had two doubles.
Lakeland snagged an early 1-0 lead in game two, but Dunedin evened the game at one in the third. Roemon Fields sparked the scoring with a two-out triple. He then scored on a Christian Lopes RBI single.
Jairo Labourt kept the Jays in the ballgame allowing one run through 4.2 innings before his departure. His final line read two runs on three hits, he also struck out four.
Lakeland plated three in the fifth to take command of the matchup, but it was J.D. Davis who stole the show with a diving catch on a dead sprint to retire the side.
The Jays struck back with three of their own in the home half, which made Davis' grab all the more important. Martin Media tripled for the third three-bagger of the game for Dunedin. Davis drove in a run on his third double of the doubleheader while Fields and Matt Dean added RBI singles.
It the end it was Matt Dean who came through in the clutch with a walk-off homer to give the Jays a 5-4 win as Dunedin swept the doubleheader. Matt Dermody was the winner of game two for Dunedin, tossing two scoreless innings.
Dunedin and Lakeland will match up tomorrow, Sunday, June 14th to conclude their three-game series against each other. Luis Santos is schedule to start for the Blue jays and he will be countered by Locke St. John of the Flying Tigers.
