Gwinnett travels to Lehigh Valley
After a day off for most teams around the International League, the Gwinnett Braves travel to Allentown, PA to take on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in a four-game set at Coca-Cola Field. Game time for Thursday and Friday's games are 7:05 p.m. when Saturday's game begins at 6:35 p.m. Sunday's game will begin at 5:35 p.m. All games can be heard on WDUN 550 AM with Tony Schiavone handling play-by-play.
Gwinnett and Lehigh Valley split their four-game series earlier this season at Coolray Field (5/14-5/17). The opener saw LHP Jo-Jo Reyes and SS Yunel Escobar make starts for the G-Braves on rehab assignment. The first two games were shutout wins for the G-Braves while the finale of the series was 8-7 loss for Gwinnett in 15 innings - the longest game in the Gwinnett franchise's 2-year history.
Gwinnett 3B Wes Timmons has had a power surge at the plate recently. After hitting just 2 home runs before 7/2, he has hit 4 bombs since then, with 2 of those coming in his last 5 games (7/30, 8/2). His 6 home runs this season are the most he's had since 2006. Timmons' season-high for homers is 7, which he has achieved twice in his career (2003, 2005).
G-Braves DH/1B Barbaro Canizares went 1-for-3 on Tuesday, keeping his batting average to .323 and maintaining the lead atop the race for the IL batting crown. He is now in 1st place in the league with Columbus' Michael Brantley in 2nd place with a .317 AVG. Canizares' mark is also good for 3rd place in all of Triple-A baseball (min. 300 ABs).
July 31's 9-6 win over Toledo marked a number of impressive streaks in the world of the Gwinnett Braves. It was the team's 5th straight win, a mark they've reached 3 times this season including when they reeled off a season-best 7 straight from 6/27-7/3 (a span that included a sweep @ TOL). International League batting-crown leader Barbaro Canizares also knocked in at least 1 RBI for his 5th straight game, a season high. And, 2 days after being activated from the DL, SS Diory Hernandez went 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and extended his IL-leading on-base streak to 26 games (tied with 1B Freddie Freeman for a 2010 team and IL high).
OF Mitch Jones was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations. OF Gregor Blanco was a part of a five-player deal in which he, RHP Jesse Chavez (ATL) and LHP Tim Collins (MISS) were sent to the Kansas City Royals for OF Rick Ankiel and RHP Kyle Farnsworth. OF Willie Cabrera was promoted from MISS on 7/31. SS/2B Diory Hernandez was recalled by the Braves on 8/2. OF Willy Tavares was released from the organization on 8/2. OF Wilkin Ramirez, who was assigned to GWN after being traded from the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later or cash considerations on 7/31, made his debut on 8/2. OF Josh Anderson was released from the organization on 8/4. RHP Chris Resop, who was recently in Gwinnett on MLB rehab assignment, was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates on 8/4.
