Ross, Stellar Pitching Propel Giants To 2-1 Victory
MODESTO, CA - Ty Ross hit a solo home run and later added an RBI single while the San Jose Giants held off Modesto's ninth-inning rally to earn a 2-1 victory over the Nuts on Monday evening at John Thurman Field. Modesto scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but Giants closer Dan Slania stranded the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position to save the win. The series-opening victory improved San Jose's overall record to 28-36.
Tommy Hanson (1-0) earned the win in his season debut after tossing five scoreless innings with just two singles allowed. Hanson, a former major leaguer who joined the Giants from Extended Spring Training before the game, walked one, struck out eight and retired the last 12 batters he faced.
Ross (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) was the only San Jose player to finish with a multi-hit game.
The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Ross stepped to the plate with one out and launched a solo home run to straightaway center field. The home run was Ross' second of the season - both have come on the current road trip.
San Jose pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the top of the fifth when Ross drove home another run. Ryder Jones led off the frame with a single before moving to second on a two-out wild pitch. Ross then singled into shallow right to plate Jones with the second Giants run of the contest.
Meanwhile, Hanson pitched around a leadoff single and a two-out walk in the bottom of the first. In the second, Correlle Prime reached on an infield single to start the inning before Hanson quickly retired the next three hitters. Hanson then set down the Nuts 1-2-3 in the third, fourth and fifth innings to maintain the San Jose lead. The right-hander struck out five out of the last seven batters he faced.
Luis Ysla (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) entered the game to begin the bottom of the sixth and issued a one-out walk before hitting a batter with two outs, but retired Troy Stein on a groundout to end the inning. Tyler Rogers (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) pitched bottom of the seventh and allowed a one-out double to Dillon Thomas, but recovered to set down the next two hitters, Zach Osborne and Cesar Galvez, on back-to-back groundouts.
With the score still 2-0, Jake Smith (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) was summoned from the bullpen to start the bottom of the eighth. Raimel Tapia greeted Smith with a double to deep right center, but the Giants reliever settled down and registered three consecutive swinging strikeouts of Rosell Herrera, Ryan McMahon and Jordan Patterson on a total of just 10 pitches to retire the side.
Slania (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) entered in the bottom of the ninth and quickly retired Stein on a groundout before Prime singled and Thomas walked to put runners on first and second. Osborne then lined a single into center to load the bases for the Nuts. Galvez was up next and he grounded out weakly to first for the second out of the inning with Prime coming home to trim the Giants lead to 2-1. Thomas, the potential tying run, advanced to third on the play while Osborne, the winning run, moved to second. Slania though retired Tapia on a routine groundout to second to finish the game.
Slania was credited with his league-high tying 12th save of the season.
Modesto starter Zach Jemiola (0-2) suffered the loss after yielding two runs (both earned) on four hits over seven innings. Jemiola struck out five and walked none.
