Four-Run First Inning Leads AquaSox to Victory

Sox Take Game One of Five-Game Series with Boise 6-2
August 5, 2010
EVERETT, Wash. - The Everett AquaSox (5-4, 32-15) scored four runs in the first inning and all nine batters recorded at least one hit en route to a 6-2 defeat of the Boise Hawks (3-6, 22-25) Thursday night in front of 2,357 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Jorden Merry (1-0, 2.70 ERA) won his first game of the season in his first appearance with the Sox since June 25. Merry pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, not allowing a hit while walking two and striking out six. He had appeared in two games for the Sox in June before being promoted to the Clinton LumberKings (Single-A).

The Sox scored first for the 32nd time (22-10) this season to give the pitching staff all the support they would need. Consecutive singles by Terry Serrano and Robbie Anston, plus a walk to Kevin Mailloux, loaded the bases with nobody out to begin the ballgame.

Kevin Rivers delivered a RBI-single to plate the first AquaSox run, followed by back-to-back passed balls by Hawks pitcher Juan Serrano (4-1, 4.37 ERA) that scored two more. Hawkins Gebbers made a productive first out as he delivered a sacrifice fly to right that put the score at 4-0.

Boise got to AquaSox starter Austin Hudson with two runs in the fifth inning. Elliot Soto hit a bloop single to score one and Pierre LePage delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Alvaro Ramirez.

Ramirez went 2-for-5 for the Hawks and leads the NWL in batting with a .393 average.

Hudson was called upon to start for the second time this season in place of Yoervis Medina, who was promoted to Clinton earlier this week. In 4.2 innings pitched Hudson allowed two runs off five hits while walking one and striking out two.

Jimmy Jacquot hit a run-scoring double in the fourth inning to plate the Sox fifth run of the night. A run-scoring single in the seventh inning by Serrano led to the eventual final of 6-2.

Jarett Attard closed it out for the Frogs with a perfect ninth inning in his second game since being called up from Peoria Aug. 2.

Game two of the five-game series begins Friday night at 7:05 with left-hander Anthony Fernandez (4-2, 3.08 ERA) taking on southpaw Austin Kirk (3-3, 3.38 ERA). Everett is one win away from 1,000 wins as a franchise (including Everett Giants).

Friday night is one of the most fun-filled nights of baseball at Everett Memorial Stadium this season. World Series MVP Dave Stewart will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch and meeting with fans in the concourse area throughout the game, signing free autographs from 7:05 to 8:35 p.m. It's also Go Green Night as the first 1,000 fans will receive a complimentary AquaSox Recycled Tote Bag, courtesy of Haggen Food and Pharmacy.
