DSL pitchers Moncion, Torres suspended

Reds, Phillies prospects test positive for banned steroid Stanozolol
June 16, 2015

NEW YORK -- Reds prospect Isaac Moncion and fellow Dominican Summer League right-hander Juan Torres of the Phillies were suspended 72 games on Tuesday after testing positive for a banned steroid.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced that both Moncion and Torres were suspended without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Both suspensions are effective immediately.

Moncion, 19, is 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA in three starts with the DSL Reds this season, striking out 10 batters over 8 1/3 innings. He's appeared in 14 Minor League games since signing with Cincinnati in 2013 and owns a 6.11 ERA in 28 innings.

Torres, 22, has four strikeouts in four innings over two relief appearances with the Phillies' Rookie-level affiliate. He debuted in 2012 and is 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA over 95 1/3 innings in 46 career outings with the DSL Phillies.

Stanozolol is a synthetic anabolic steroid derived from testosterone that is sometimes prescribed by veterinarians to encourage muscle growth, red blood cell production, bone density and to stimulate the appetite of weakened animals. Three others players have received suspensions this year after testing positive for the substance.

With Moncion and Torres, Major League Baseball has suspended 58 players this year for violations of the Minor League drug program, including three from the DSL Reds roster.
