2014 Cougar Kyle Schwarber Makes MLB Debut
GENEVA, Ill. - Catcher Kyle Schwarber, a member of the 2014 Kane County Cougars, has not only made his Major League debut this week but 24 hours removed from his first big league appearance on Tuesday, recorded 4 hits in his first start during the Chicago Cubs' 17-0 win over Cleveland on Wednesday. Schwarber became the 133rd former Cougar to reach the Major Leagues, joining a list that includes former Cougars and present-day stars such as Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Gonzalez and A.J. Burnett. Schwarber is the first Cougar to debut with the Cubs as part of the Cougars' affiliation with the club in 2013 and 2014.
Current Los Angeles Angels closer Huston Street ('04) was the last Cougars player to make his big league debut just one year removed from having played at Kane County.
Schwarber is the fifth Cougars alumnus to make his big league debut this season, joining Tyler Ladendorf ('09), Andrew McKirahan ('13), Sugar Ray Marimon ('11) and Orlando Calixte ('11-'12). The five debuts this season is the highest number in a single season for the Cougars since 2011 when five alums broke into the big leagues. Schwarber is the third former Cougar to make his big league debut with the Cubs, joining Roosevelt Brown and Ross Gload.
In 23 games with the Cougars last season, Schwarber batted .361 and has batted .300 or better at each professional level including Short-A Boise, Kane County, Class-A Advanced Daytona and Double-A Tennessee.
The Cougars continue a six-game homestand this evening at 6:30 PM against Wisconsin. Homestand highlights this weekend include Pirate and Princess Night on Friday, a pre-game concert by Mr. Myers Band for Jimmy Buffett Night on Saturday, and special Father's Day festivities on Sunday including pre-game catch on the field, a pre-game autograph session and much more.
