Dash claim suspended game, eliminate Red Sox
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 20, 2015) - Behind Yency Almonte's sterling High-A debut and a balanced offensive attack, Winston-Salem blasted Salem 8-2, eliminating the Red Sox from the first-half Southern Division race, in the completion of a suspended game that began back on June 2.
The game resumed with the Dash (29-39) on top 3-0 and runners on first and second with two outs and a 1-0 count to Jake Peter. Salem (37-31) reliever Taylor Grover walked Peter to load the bases and then plunked Trey Michalczewski to turn the carousel and extend Winston-Salem's lead to 4-0.
Almonte (1-0) yielded consecutive singles to begin the bottom of the third, but then retired 11 in a row en route to his seven-inning effort. He did not give up an earned run and fanned two in his High-A debut, which is technically a relief appearance. Jake Cose started the game and pitched both innings that did take place on June 2.
With the score still 4-0 in the sixth, Michael Suiter and T.J. Williams singled with one out. Adam Engel's double brought in Suiter and then Peter's sacrifice fly plated Suiter to make it 6-0. Michalczewski was able to reach on an infield single that scored Engel to give Winston-Salem the 7-0 cushion.
Forrestt Allday was able to reach on an error to begin the eighth and moved to third on Jake Romanski's double. Back-to-back RBI groundouts then put Salem on the board, drawing them to within 7-2.
In the bottom half of the frame, Cleuluis Rondon singled in a run to put Winston-Salem on top 8-2.
Prior to the suspension of the contest on June 2, Chris Jacobs singled to lead off the second before moving to third on Omar Narvaez's double. Nolan Earley delivered an RBI single to break the scoreless tie. Two batters later, Salem starter Ty Buttrey (5-1) walked Suiter to load the bases. Williams' infield single brought in Narvaez and Engel's sacrifice fly plated Earley to put Winston-Salem on top 3-0.
