First Half Ends With Two Shutouts

Mudcats were shutout in back-to-back games to finish 2015 first half
June 21, 2015

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The first half of the 2015 season came to a quiet finish as the Mudcats were shutout in back-to-back games by the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Carolina lost Saturday's suspended game 4-0 and dropped the finale of the series 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Mudcats (34-35) were held to just one run over the final three games of the series, but finished the final road trip of the first half with a 4-3 record. The Nationals (33-37) won the series three games to one and handed the Mudcats consecutive shutouts for the first time this season.

Saturday's game made it through the third before it was postponed and resumed on Sunday. The Nationals, at the time of the suspension, led 2-0 and finished with a 4-0 victory on Sunday.

Andrew Waszak started Saturday's game and ended up taking the loss after allowing two runs on four hits over three innings. All three innings of his start came when the game originally began on Saturday night. Waszak (L, 4-5, 3.48 ERA) had retired the first six he faced in consecutive order before allowing two runs and four hits in the third.

Britt Robertshaw followed Waszak out of the bullpen after game three resumed in the fourth on Sunday and held the Nationals to a run and two hits over three innings pitched. He allowed both hits and one run in the fourth, but struck out the side in the inning. Robertshaw struck out six and walked two over his three innings.

On Potomac's end, the win went to right-handed reliever Wander Suero after he put up starter like numbers out of the pen. Suero (W, 6-2, 2.50 ERA) went five full innings in relief of Reynaldo Lopez who had originally started the game on Saturday night. Suero finished with two walks, three strikeouts and just one hit allowed over his five scoreless frames.

Adrian Sanchez and John Wooten each had RBI singles in the third on Saturday before the rain forced the game to be suspended. The P-Nats led 2-0 through the third on Saturday and tacked on two more runs with run scoring hits in the fourth and eighth innings on Sunday. Jimmy Yezzo drove in one with a single off Robertshaw two outs in the third. Robertshaw started the inning with consecutive strikeouts.

Drew Ward finished the scoring in game three of the series with a sacrifice fly off Mauricio Cabrera. Cabrera pitched the final two innings of Saturday's suspended game and finished with no hits, one run, two walks and a strikeout.

Seth Webster started the shortened finale of the series and allowed just one run over four and 2/3 innings pitched. He gave up a two out RBI single to Ward in the first and three hits overall in the inning. Webster (L, 3-3, 2.79) suffered the tough luck loss and finished his outing with seven hits allowed and a strikeout.

Webster left in the fifth with a man on third and Matt Marksberry took over out of the bullpen. Marksberry stranded his inherited runner and struck out the left-handed batting Ward to end the inning. He finished with two strikeouts and pitched a scoreless sixth while keeping the Nationals to one hit over one and 1/3 innings.

Tyler Mapes (W, 1-0, 2.12) started the finale for Potomac and was able to make the one run lead hold as he kept Carolina scoreless over five innings pitched. He scattered two hits and struck out two while earning his first win of the season. Justin Amlung pitched a scoreless sixth in his Carolina League debut and Nick Lee picked up his eighth save in nine tries with a scoreless seventh.
