August 9, 2010
Lakeland, FL - The Flying Tigers are pleased to announce that Jaime Garzon has been selected by the Florida State League (FSL) Scholarship Committee as one of the twelve $1,500 educational scholarship winners. Garzon will be a guest of the Florida Marlins in a pre-game ceremony on Sunday, August 22nd. He will also be honored prior to the Flying Tigers game on August 21st.

Garzon is a native of Bogotá, Colombia and attends Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida. He is currently a graduate student seeking a Masters of Business Administration. Garzon was hired by the Detroit Tigers as an intern in January and has worked in the ticket office and has also assisted with special events and promotions for the Flying Tigers FSL season and Detroit Tigers spring training. The FSL Scholarship Committee awarded a scholarship to an individual of all twelve FSL teams. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants had to be an employee of or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club. They must also be at least a high school junior by the 2010 fall term. The award was based on grades, financial need, leadership capabilities and job performance.

The Florida Marlins with the FSL have sponsored the scholarship program for the past eleven years through their Community Foundation and the Executive Director, Nancy Olson. The purpose of the scholarship program is to encourage and reward school age employees and send a message that education is the key to success in life.
