Corpus Christi High School Baseball Tops

Twenty-three State Titles for Area Schools Since 1965
August 9, 2010

CORPUS CHRISTI - We've known it all along.

Last week, MaxPreps.com, a website devoted to comprehensive national coverage of high school athletics, recognized Corpus Christi as America's best high school baseball city.

Calallen and Moody, who've combined for five UIL state championships since 2000 and drawn jaw-dropping numbers to two three-game playoff series at Whataburger Field, have thrust Coastal Bend high school baseball into the national consciousness during the first decade of the 21st century. Over 41,000 witnessed classic Wildcat-Trojan matchups in 2007 second-round action and the 2009 Region IV 4A finals.

Carroll (5A) and John Paul II (TAPPS 4A) captured state titles in 2010. The Tigers return eight everyday players in 2011, including six who started as sophomores for Lee Yeager. Calallen advanced to the 4A finals before falling to Brenham. The Steve Chapman-led Wildcats have made 11 state tournament appearances.

Fifteen different area teams have won state championships since Solomon Coles garnered the PVIL 3A title in 1965, before Texas schools were fully integrated and brought under the UIL umbrella.

Two years later, Burt Hooton and the King Mustangs won in 4A.
