Schwarber joins Iowa along with rehabbers Neil Ramirez and Mike Olt

Negin sold to Mexican League; Rivero placed on paternity list

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Chicago Cubs have made a series of roster moves over the past two days that affect Iowa's active roster for tonight's game against Omaha at Principal Park. Outfielder Matt Szczur was recalled by Chicago on Monday. Taking his spot on the roster is catcher Kyle Schwarber who was optioned to Triple-A on Sunday.

 

Furthermore, the major league rehab assignments of infielder Mike Olt and right-handed pitcher Neil Ramirez have been transferred to Iowa from Double-A Tennessee.

 

Additionally, Chicago sold the rights of right-handed pitcher Yoanner Negrin to a club in the Mexican League and right-hander Armando Rivero has been placed on paternity leave.

Szczur, 25, joined Chicago for the fourth time this season last night. He is batting .179 (7-for-39) with a home run, two doubles and seven RBI in 24 games with Chicago this season. With Iowa, Szczur has batted .287 (37-for-129) with six doubles, two triples, four home runs and 18 RBI in 36 games this season.

 

Schwarber, 22, batted .364 (8-for-22) with one triple, one home run and six RBI in six games with Chicago. He batted .320 (63-for-197) with 10 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs and 39 RBI in 58 games with Double-A Tennessee to earn Southern League All-Star honors before his promotion to the big leagues June 16.

 

Olt, 26, made Chicago's Opening Day roster and hit .133 (2-for-15) with one home run in six games. He was placed on the disabled list April 17 with a hairline fracture in his right wrist. Olt went 4-for-9 with two doubles and a triple in three games with Tennessee to begin his rehab work over the weekend.

 

Ramirez, 26, was placed on the disabled list April 17 with right shoulder inflammation. He was 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA (1ER/3.0IP) and four strikeouts in five games for Chicago before the injury. He tossed a perfect inning in each of his two rehab appearances for the Smokies on June 17 and 21.

 

Negrin, 31, went 1-0 with a 2.97 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 30.1 innings for Iowa this season. He appeared in 13 games, including two starts. This will be Negrin's third stint in Mexico in his career. He played for the Olmecas de Tobasco in both 2012 and 2014.

 

Rivero, 27, is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA (10ER/26.2IP) and 26 strikeouts in 26 games for Iowa this season.


With these moves, Iowa's active roster is at 23 players plus one player on the disabled list, two players on major league rehab assignment and one on paternity.
