Shorebirds Represent In SAL All-Star Game
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds were well represented at the 56th South Atlantic League All-Star Game, which was held at McCormick Field in Asheville, N.C. on Tuesday night.
Outfielder Conor Bierfeldt, infielder Steve Wilkerson and relief pitcher Garrett Cortright all played on the North Division team, which won the contest 7-5.
Wilkerson got the start at second base for the North and showed why he has been one of the most steady contributors for the Shorebirds in the first half. After walking in his first at-bat, Wilkerson clubbed his first home run of the season in the top of the third to put the North ahead 4-1. It was his first home run in 154 at-bats this season, but it will not count toward his season total.
Cortright faced two batters in the bottom of the fifth, going a third of an inning. After getting Derek Miller of the Greenville Drive to ground out, he hit pinch hitter Mauricio Dubon, who also plays for Greenville. Cortright will enter the second half of the season with a 1.50 ERA and figures to be a key member of the bullpen following the recent call-up of closer Donnie Hart to Frederick.
Bierfeldt was a part of the festivities early, as he participated in the HomeTrust Bank Home Run Derby that was held before the game. He was able to hit three home runs in the opening round, but it was not enough to make the finals. The tournament was won by Ryan O'Hearn of the Lexington Legends.
He then entered the game in the top of the fifth and played left field. His only at-bat came in the top of the seventh, when he hit into a force out to end the frame. Bierfeldt leads the Shorebirds with seven home runs and 56 RBIs at the halfway point of the season.
The Shorebirds return home to begin a nine-game homestand on Thursday, June 25. For more information or to order tickets, visit theshorebirds.com or call 410-219-3112.
