Serna falls short of cycle in loss

KC Serna fell a home run shy of a cycle on Tuesday night against Akron

KC Serna needed one more bat at a chance for hitting for the cycle but fell short as the Fightin Phils (37-33) lost 9-4 to the Akron RubberDucks (37-34). Serna was left standing in the on-deck circle as JP Crawford struck to end the game. 

Ronny Rodriguez hit a RBI triple off Tom Windle in the top of the second inning to give the RubberDucks a 1-0 lead. Akron then extended their lead to 6-0 off Windle in the top of the third inning as they recorded six hits and scored five runs. KC Serna put the Fightins on the board off Shawn Morimando (5-6) in the bottom of the third inning with a sacrifice fly to score Ethan Chapman.

Harold Martinez recorded his first RBI back with the Fightins off Morimando in the bottom of the fourth inning, as he grounded out to score Brodie Greene and cut Akron's lead to 6-2. Reading added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Kelly Dugan RBI groundout to get the score within three runs, 6-3.  

Windle (2-5) left the game after four innings as he gave up a season-high 11 hits and allowed six runs (five earned with two walks and one strikeout. Ethan Martin entered the game in the top of the fifth inning and pitched two innings as he allowed two runs off four hits with two strikeouts.  

Akron led 8-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning as KC Serna hit a RBI double to put the Fightin Phils within four runs, 8-4. Serna fell a home run shy of the cycle as he also tripled in the fifth inning and scored on the Dugan RBI groundout.  

Akron's Erik Gonzalez hit a solo home run off Ryan O'Sullivan in the top of the eighth inning to extend the lead to 9-4. Colton Murray tossed a scoreless top of the ninth inning. Jeff Johnson earned his 11th save for Akron as he retired the side in the bottom of the ninth inning.  

The Fightin Phils continue their home-stand on Wednesday night against the Akron RubberDucks. First pitch is at 7:05 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 6:35 pm. Fans can also view the game on MiLB.tv beginning at 7:05 pm.
