Brandon Bixler activated from DL
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that LHP Brandon Bixler has been activated from the 7-day DL and LHP Luke Westphal will join the Kernels from Fort Myers (FSL). Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.
Bixler was placed on the DL when the Kernels broke Spring Training in April. He was selected by the Twins in the 16th round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft and pitched for the Kernels last season, posting a 7-4 record and 2.68 ERA in 41 relief appearances. In 74 IP, he allowed 49 hits and 25 runs (22 earned) with 37 walks and 77 strikeouts.
The Twins signed Westphal as a non-drafted free agent on January 31, 2015. He pitched last season for the Gateway Grizzlies of the independent Frontier League, making 35 appearances (one start) with a 3-5 record, 2.91 ERA and one save. He has appeared in 16 games (five starts) for Fort Myers, posting a 3-3 record and 3.82 ERA. In 33 IP he's allowed 42 hits and 16 runs (14 earned) with 15 walks and 24 strikeouts.
With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players, with 10 players currently on the DL.
The Kernels are currently on break for the Midwest League All-Star Game. They return to action on Thursday, June 25th and open a four game home series with the Quad Cities River Bandits.
