Mets calling up top prospect Matz
Top Mets prospect Steven Matz will make his Major League debut Sunday, according to multiple reports.
New York will call up the hard-throwing left-hander on Friday, a move first reported by Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal on Twitter. The addition of Matz could lead to a six-man rotation for New York.
Matz, 24, is 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA and 94 strikeouts over 90 1/3 innings in 15 outings at Triple-A Las Vegas this season. The Mets' 2009 second-round pick was rumored to join the big league team some time around July, but appears to be on the way up following the departure of Dillon Gee.
MLB.com's Anthony DiComo confirmed the move, saying a source signaled Matz would be promoted. Mets manager Terry Collins wouldn't budge Thursday afternoon, only telling MLB.com that an announcement about their rotation is "very possible" to come on Friday. The Mets' current rotation includes Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Bartolo Colon, Jon Niese and Noah Syndergaard.
Syndergaard, 22, was one of several high-profile top prospects to reach the Majors this season after making his debut on May 12. He was the Mets' No. 1 prospect before 6-foot-2 southpaw took over the distinction.
Matz's opportunity has perhaps come about after Gee, the Mets' Opening Day starter last year, was designated for assignment on June 16.
"I talked to Wally [Backman] yesterday and he had some very, very good things to say about Matz," Collins told the New York Daily News on Tuesday. "But that's not my call [about bringing him up]. He's pitching very, very well down there and whenever that time is, he's gotta be heavily considered.
"We all know what he's doing down there," Collins added. "It's just a matter of when the time is right. He's another guy with innings limits. In Triple-A, we can throw him four innings and take him out, like they did the other night. We can't bring him up and do that here."
Mets fans have long anticipated the debut the local prospect who went to Ward Melville Senior High School in nearby East Setauket, N.Y., in Long Island before pitching at Stony Brook. An MiLB.com Mets Organization All-Star the past two years, Matz has produced sub-3.00 ERAs in each of his four Minor League seasons. He went 10-9 with a 2.24 ERA and 131 strikeouts in 140 2/3 innings between Double-A Binghamton and Class A Advanced St. Lucie last season after finishing 5-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 21 starts for Class A Savannah in 2013. He owned a 1.55 ERA in his debut season of 2012 with Rookie-level Kingsport.
Matz auditioned for a spot in New York's rotation in Spring Training, but ultimately was assigned to Triple-A, where he's held opponents to three earned runs or fewer in 14 of his 15 outings in the Pacific Coast League.
"I knew coming in that the Mets' pitching staff is pretty stacked, and they have their five guys, and I wasn't really expecting to make a starting spot in Spring Training," Matz told NJ.com in March. "I'm just happy for the opportunity I got."
Nats promote Turner to Triple-A
The Washington Nationals reportedly promoted No. 3 prospect Trea Turner to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday after the former Padres infielder spent just 10 days with Double-A Harrisburg.
Turner, who was originally drafted by San Diego, joined the Nationals organization on June 14 as the player to be named later in a three-team trade last December that sent Wil Myers to the Padres. The right-handed shortstop, who was named to the All-Star Futures Game on Thursday morning, spent most of this season with Double-A San Antonio in the Padres system before joining Harrisburg in the Eastern League earlier this month.
Between the two clubs, the North Carolina State product is hitting .327 with five homers, 39 RBIs, 15 stolen bases and a .382 on-base percentage in 68 games.
The Washington Post reported the move Thursday, citing "multiple people familiar with the situation."
