Iowa sweeps doubleheader to win series with Omaha

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Cubs (38-34) used a walk-off and a shutout to edge past the Omaha Storm Chasers (39-34) in both games of a doubleheader in Pacific Coast League action on Thursday night. Iowa won game one 3-2 in 10 innings on Kyle Schwarber's walk-off double. The I-Cubs won game two 1-0 on the back of 6.0 shutout innings from Carlos Pimentel.

 

Schwarber notched a triple for his first hit as an I-Cub in the third inning of game one. His second hit came with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the tenth. Schwarber doubled to deep center field to drive in Arismendy Alcantara for the game-winning run.

 

Right-hander Dallas Beeler started on the mound for Iowa in game one. He allowed five hits, two earned runs and a home run with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Righty Blake Cooper (5-2) earned the win. He allowed one hit over 1.0 inning.

 

Right-hander Yohan Pino allowed five hits, two earned runs with five strikeouts and a home run over 6.0 innings in game one. Lefty Buddy Baumann (1-1) picked up the loss after allowing two hits, an earned run with three walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out four.

 

Iowa only had two hits in game two, both coming from Christian Villanueva. He drove in Adron Chambers for the game's only run in the first inning.

 

Pimentel (6-4) got the win for the I-Cubs in game two. He allowed three hits with a walk and nine strikeouts over 6.0 innings to lower his season ERA to 3.15. Right-hander Gonzalez Germen earned his third save with a scoreless seventh inning.

 

Righty Clayton Mortensen (4-6) picked up the loss in game two of the doubleheader. He allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk with eight strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

 

Mike Olt led Iowa offensively in game one of the doubleheader. He went 3-for-4 with a home run. Schwarber combined to go 2-for-10 on the day with a triple and a double. In game two, Villanueva went 2-for-2 with a stolen base.

 

Iowa will host the New Orleans Zephyrs for a four-game series starting Friday at Principal Park. First pitch is set for 7:08 p.m. CT. The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 6:40 p.m. CT.
