RiverDogs to Don Jersey Tribute for Remainder of Season
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs, in conjunction with their owners, The Goldklang Group, have announced a special uniform tribute in the wake of last week's tragic events at Emanuel AME Church.
The RiverDogs will wear a black ribbon around the left sleeve of both their home and road jerseys for the remainder of the season.
"It's a traditional baseball gesture; simple, but poignant. The RiverDogs are extremely proud to represent the Lowcountry," said General Manager Dave Echols. "The players and field staff will wear the ribbon on their sleeves in the remaining games at home and on the road this season. They carry with them the remembrance of the victims and their families at the center of this horrible event."
On the last home game of the season, whether it is a regular-season or postseason game, the RiverDogs will put the home jerseys up for auction and will donate the proceeds to a local charity with direct ties to the tragedy. The road jerseys will also be auctioned off for charity at a time that has yet to be determined.
The RiverDogs players and coaches have also been touched by the tragedy and the tribute they will carry with them.
Hitting Coach Greg Colbrunn: "It's an honor, anything that we can possibly do to get solace to the friends and families of the congregation. It means a lot to the players and coaches of this organization. We bring the unity of the city with us wherever we go and hopefully we can continue to do our part in the community's healing process."
Infielder Ryan Lindemuth: "I think it's an appropriate and touching sign of remembrance for the victims and their families. As players and as a team we feel as though it's really special to be a part of the community and a part of the response that they've given so far. It's been really cool and something that we're all really proud to be a part of - something bigger than ourselves - something we'll never forget."
The RiverDogs will display the tribute on their home jerseys for the first time when they return to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Saturday, July 4th against the Rome Braves.
