Giants Acquire INF Mike Fontenot

IF Edgar Renteria Placed on 15-Day Disabled List
August 13, 2010
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The San Francisco Giants have acquired infielder Mike Fontenot from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league outfielder Evan Crawford, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.

Fontenot, 30, has batted .284 (48-for-169) with 11 doubles, three triples, one home run and 20 RBI in 75 games with the Cubs this season. His .284 batting average ranked fourth among current Cubs and his .368 average (14-for-38) with runners in scoring position led team (min. of 25 at-bats). Fontenot, who had a two-run pinch-hit double in the eighth inning last night, led the Cubs with a .347 average (17-for-49) and a .409 on-base percentage in the month of May. The versatile infielder has made 40 starts this season, including 29 at second base, seven at third base and four at shortstop.

Acquired by Chicago in the trade that sent Sammy Sosa to Baltimore in 2005, Fontenot was in his sixth season with the Cubs organization. He owns a lifetime average of .269 (276-for-1,025) with 67 doubles, 10 triples, 22 home runs and 132 RBI in 422 big league contests, all with Chicago.

Fontenot will wear number 14 and is available tonight.

Crawford, who just turned 22 years old last Thursday, has batted .255 (110-for-432) with 12 doubles, 12 triples, four home runs, 29 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 109 games with single-A Augusta this season. He was drafted by the Giants in the ninth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft and split last year with rookie-level Arizona and short-season Salem-Keizer, batting .300 (54-for-180) in 47 games.

Renteria was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left bicep strain, which he re-aggravated in last night's game. He had missed three-straight games last weekend in Atlanta (Aug. 6-8) with the same injury. This marks the third time this season that Renteria has landed on the disabled list (also May 7-22 with right groin strain and May 27-June 16 with right hamstring strain). He was batting .278 (58-for-209) with two home runs and 21 RBI in 61 games this season.
