August 13, 2010
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The San Francisco Giants have acquired outfielder Jose Guillen and cash considerations from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for a player to be named later, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.

The 34-year-old Guillen was hitting .255 (101-for-396) with 16 home runs and 62 RBI in 106 games for the Royals prior to being designated for assignment on August 5. Guillen, who returns to the National League for the first time since playing with the Nationals in 2006, posted a career-best 21-game hitting streak in June, which tied for the sixth longest all-time in Royals history. He batted .378 (31-for-82) with 13 RBI during the streak and finished the month of June with a .340 batting average, second on the team to only David DeJesus (.410).

The 6-foot-0, 216-pound Guillen has spent the majority of his big league career playing right field, appearing in 1,173 game in right, 224 contests in left and 14 games in centerfield. He's collected 105 outfield assists in his career, one of just 11 active players to reach triple digits.

Guillen has reached the double-digit home run plateau in 10 of his 14 big league seasons and has recorded at least 80+ RBI in five of his campaigns. He hit a career-best 31 home runs with Cincinnati and Oakland in 2003 and drove in a career-high 104 runs with Anaheim in 2004.

Guillen does have postseason experience, appearing in the 2003 Division Series with Oakland and going 5-for-11 (.455) in four games.

The 14-year Major League veteran owns a career average of .270 (1,557-for-5,760) with 300 doubles, 211 home runs and 872 RBI in 1,608 big league games with Pittsburgh (1997-99), Tampa Bay (1999-2001), Arizona (2002), Cincinnati (2002-03), Oakland (2003), Anaheim (2004), Washington (2005-06), Seattle (2007) and Kansas City (2008-10).
