Phillies summon Nola to make MLB debut

Righty will become fourth 2014 first-round pick to reach Majors
July 17, 2015

Just a month after making his Triple-A debut, top Phillies pitching prospect Aaron Nola is headed to the big leagues.

The seventh overall pick in the 2014 Draft, Nola has burned through the Minor Leagues in rapid fashion. He made his pro debut in the Class A Advanced Florida State League last summer and had reached Double-A Reading -- where he went 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA in five starts -- by season's end.

It was more of the same this spring, where the LSU product, now 22, continued to dominate the Eastern League for the Fightin Phils, posting a 7-3 record and 1.88 ERA in 12 starts. Jumping to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Nola tossed five scoreless innings in his International League debut June 18.

Philadelphia has a history of drafting raw high-upside prospects, but Nola was considered the most Major League-ready pitcher in his Draft class. He'll become the fourth 2014 first-round pick to reach the Majors when he debuts Tuesday, following Brandon Finnegan (Royals), Carlos Rodon (White Sox) and Kyle Schwarber (Cubs).

Though Nola does not have overpowering stuff -- his fastball sits in the low 90s -- he makes up for it with stellar command of his fastball, changeup and slider. On MLB.com's 20-to-80 scale, Nola graded at 60 for his fastball, changeup and control. Though his slider lags behind the other two with a rating of 50, MLB.com's scouting report said the pitch has improved.
