Thurman's return spoiled in 6-1 loss
ZEBULON, NC - The Dash scored three in the second and two more in the fourth while spoiling Andrew Thurman's return from injury in a 6-1 Winston-Salem victory over the Mudcats on Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
Thurman (L, 4-3, 3.47) retired the side and struck out two in the first before allowing three runs and three hits in the second. The start was his first since landing on the disabled list earlier in the season on May 14. Thurman struck out four, walked two and allowed five earned runs on four hits over four innings and took the loss for the Mudcats (45-47, 11-12).
Rehabbing Major Leaguer Nate Jones started for the Dash, but it was reliever Brian Clark who earned the win after allowing just one run over five innings pitched. Clark (W, 4-3, 2.45) took over in the second after Jones pitched a scoreless first. The Winston-Salem lefty scattered four hits, allowed one run and struck out four while earning the win.
The Dash (42-49, 12-9) scored three in the second and two more in the fourth against Thurman before scoring once more against reliever Seth Webster in the fifth. Thurman walked Keon Barnum, allowed a hit to Nick Basto and plunked Omar Narvaez with an 0-2 pitch to start the three run Winston-Salem inning. T.J. Williams drove in the first run of the frame with a RBI single and the inning continued with a sacrifice fly by Toby Thomas and a run scoring hit from Cleuluis Rondon.
Williams struck again with a RBI triple in the fourth after Thurman walked Narvaez to start that inning as well. A sacrifice fly from Rondon later in the fourth plated Williams and the Dash took a 5-0 lead after the fourth against Thurman.
Webster followed Thurman in the fifth and allowed a run and three hits in the inning before settling down. In all, Webster pitched three full innings in his first relief appearance of the season and allowed just one run and five hits. He also struck out five and did not walk a batter in his three innings of work.
Andy Otero pitched the final two innings for Carolina and was able to keep the Dash scoreless over the remainder of the game. Otero finished with three strikeouts and scattered three hits over the final two.
Clark left after the sixth, but not before allowing a RBI double to Reed Harper. Connor Lien started the sixth with an infield hit to short and scored one pitch later on a groundball into the left field corner by Harper. Andre Wheeler took over out of the bullpen in the seventh and worked two scoreless innings. Euclides Leyer finished the game with a scoreless ninth and retired the side in order to finish the game.
The series ended in a 2-2 split and the Mudcats fell to two games back of first in the second half standings with the loss. Carolina will continue its homestand on Sunday with game one of three against the Wilmington Blue Rocks beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Five County Stadium.
