Wings right-hander Greg Peavey came into Sunday's game looking for his first win since being promoted from Double-A June 21. After a scoreless first inning, the IronPigs went ahead 2-0 after a one-out walk, followed by a homer by Chris McGuiness. Peavey worked his way out of further trouble by notching a pair of strikeouts.
Peavey settled down and found a groove, keeping Lehigh Valley in check. In the fifth inning, Peavey got a little help from catcher Paulino. After allowing a one-out single to Russ Canzler, Peavey threw strike three to Cord Phelps, and Paulino threw out Canzler stealing on the pitch for the strikeout, throw-out double play to end the inning.
IronPigs start Severino Gonzalez was perfect through four innings, but the Wings finally got to him with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Danny Ortiz and Eric Farris singled, to put runners on base for Argenis Diaz. Diaz doubled and both Ortiz and Farris scored to tie the game 2-2. Paulino followed that up with a single, and Diaz scored to give the Wings a 3-2 lead. After walking Jorge Polanco, Gonzalez got James Beresford to fly out to center field to end the inning. Gonzalez threw 4 2/3 perfect innings before allowing the hit to Ortiz.
Peavey (1-4) worked six innings and allowed six hits, two earned runs, and three walks while striking out five. Peavey threw 102 pitches, 64 for strikes.
Farris, Diaz and Paulino teamed up again to boost the Wings' lead in the seventh. Farris singled with one out, Diaz followed with a single, and Paulino doubled to bring home both runners to make it 5-2 Red Wings. That brought an end to the day for Gonzalez, with Dalier Hinojosa taking over on the mound.
Gonzalez (1-5) set down the first 14 batters he faced, but ended up with a line of 6 1/3 inning pitched, with seven hits and six runs allowed. He walked one, struck out one, and threw 91 pitches, 61 for strikes.
Michael Tonkin took for Peavey to start the seventh, and Tonkin pitched two perfect innings, striking out one and getting help from a nifty defensive play by Diaz in the seventh.
Logan Darnell worked the ninth inning for the Red Wings, getting three quick outs with a strikeout to end the comeback win.
