Stottlemyre Jr. promoted to pitching post
Stottlemyre, the son of former big-league pitcher and longtime pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Sr., had been the pitching coach of Arizona's rookie league Missoula team last season. In his new role, he will oversee the organization's Minor League pitching coaches and serve as a roving instructor during the Minor League season.
Arizona's affiliates include Pacific Coast League and Triple-A champion Tucson, Double-A Tennessee, Class A Advanced Lancaster, Class A South Bend, Class A Short-Season Yakima and Pioneer League champion Missoula (Rookie).
Well regarded for his work with the organization's younger pitchers, Stottlemyre has been with the Arizona organization since 2002. A standout at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Stottlemyre was a member of the Houston, Kansas City and New York Mets organizations during an eight-year professional career.
"He is a tremendous addition to lead our pitching department moving forward," farm director A.J. Hinch said. "I feel confident in Mel's vision and work ethic and look forward to his impact on our pitchers and pitching coaches."
Stottlemyre's lone big-league stint occurred in 1990 with the Royals. His brother, Todd, pitched for the Diamondbacks from 1999-2002.
Stottlemyre replaces Dennis Lewallyn, whose contract was not renewed.
