Sherry named Orioles' head groundskeeper

Thunder groundskeeper becomes second woman to ever hold job in Majors
October 19, 2006
The Orioles today named Nicole Sherry as head groundskeeper at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, making her the second woman ever to hold that position with a Major League team.

Sherry, who was the Orioles' assistant head groundskeeper from 2001 through 2003, served the past three seasons as the head groundskeeper for the Eastern League's Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. She returns to the Orioles replacing Dave Nehila, who resigned last month to pursue other business opportunities.

A native of Wilmington, Del., and a graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in agriculture, Sherry was named the first woman head groundskeeper in Eastern League history on February 24, 2004, when she joined Trenton. Prior to working for the Orioles as an assistant, she worked for several golf courses and with the University of Delaware's Research and Education Center, testing potential new herbicides.

Sherry joins Heather Nabozny, who has been with the Detroit Tigers since 1999, as the only female head groundskeepers in Major League Baseball. According to the Sports Turf Managers Association, there have been approximately 10 women who have held the position of head groundskeeper in the history of professional baseball.
