** Mobile 6, Carolina 1 **
ZEBULON, NC - Kyler Newby gave the Mobile BayBears six strong innings to pick up his third win of the season as the BayBears defeat the Carolina Mudcats 6-1 at Five County Stadium on Thursday night.
Carolina (23-30) struck first in the opening inning against Newby as Kris Negron lined the first pitch he saw off the left field wall to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Negron scored two hitters later when Luis Terrero doubled to left for his 20th RBI of the season, however Carolina could not score anymore off the BayBears starter as they stranded the bases loaded in the first.
Mobile (30-22) answered right back in the top of the second inning off Mudcat starter James Avery (L, 0-3) who allowed a leadoff single to Knorad Schmidt and after Taylor Hardin grounded into a double play, it looked as if the Mudcats would get out of the inning unharmed, however, Jake Elmore delivered a two-out single to score Schmidt. One hitter later, Ollie Linton, tripled to right to bring home the second BayBear run of the inning and give them a 2-1 lead after two.
The game remained a one run affair as Newby and Avery both settled down and pitched outstanding into the middle innings. In the sixth, Mobile added yet another two out run. Schmidt doubled down the line in left and was brought home on a Sean Coughlin single and the BayBears had a 3-1 lead after six.
Carolina had one last shot at Newby in the seventh as Jose Castro singled to begin the inning and Denis Phipps delivered a pinch-hit single back up the middle and the Mudcats had runners at first and second with one out for the top of the order and Negro. Once again Negron saw a pitch he liked a laced it back up the box. However, Newby stuck out his glove made the catch and doubled off Castro at second to end the Mudcat threat.
In the eighth, Carolina went to the bullpen and the BayBears added another run, this time off Brad Boxberger. After striking out Evan Frey to begin the inning, Boxberger walked the bases loaded and Coughlin delivered his third single of the night and his second RBI of the contest and gave Mobile a 4-1 lead. Boxberger then bared down and got the next two hitters to leave the bases full and keep it a three run deficit for the Mudcats.
Carolina brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs as Terrero singled and Henry walked to bring Jake Kahaulelio to the plate, but he struck out swinging to end another Mudcat threat.
Mobile added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning off of Justin Freeman who allowed a RBI triple to Frey and a Cowgill sacrifice fly to give the BayBears a 6-1 lead.
In the Carolina ninth inning, the Mudcats could not scratch against Daniel Stange who worked an inning and a third to give the BayBears a 6-1 win in game two of the five game series.
The series continues tomorrow night with a 7:15 first pitch as Carolina runs Matt Klinker (6-6, 2.65) while the BayBears counter with Ryan Cook (0-0, 0.00)
