Joel Skinner Bobblehead Giveaway Set for August 4
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- The Charlotte Knights will honor manager Joel Skinner -- the winningest manager in Knights history -- with a bobblehead in his likeness when the team returns home to open a 10-game homestand on Tuesday, August 4 . Gates open at 6:00 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark for Tuesday's opener and the Knights will face the Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays) at 7:05 p.m. from Uptown Charlotte.
The first 3,000 fans through the gates on Tuesday, August 4 will receive the bobblehead of the Charlotte skipper. Skinner entered the 2015 season with the most wins in franchise history (211) over three seasons with the Knights. Back for his fourth campaign in 2015, Skinner's squad has battled for the top spot in the International League South Division all season. On June 20, 2015, the former major league catcher notched his 250th career win as Knights manager.
Skinner managed the Buffalo Bisons -- Charlotte's opponent on Tuesday -- to an 86-59 record in 2000. The team made it to the Governors' Cup Finals that season and he earned the Baseball America and The Sporting News Minor League Manager of the Year that year. At the time, the Bisons were the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Skinner also played for the Bisons in 1985 when they were the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
In 2002 as interim manager of the Cleveland Indians, Skinner led the Tribe to a 35-41 mark. By managing the Indians that season, the Skinners became one of three father-son combinations to manage at the Major League level. Bob Skinner, Joel's father, managed the Philadelphia Phillies (1968-69) and the San Diego Padres (1977). The Skinners joined the Macks (Connie and Earle) and the Sislers (George and Dick) in this exclusive club.
Overall, Skinner played 15 seasons of professional baseball, including nine seasons in the majors with the Chicago White Sox (1983-86), New York Yankees (1986-88) and Cleveland Indians (1989-91). He appeared in six games for the Knights in 1994.
