RockHounds Return the Favor
MIDLAND, TX - After the Hooks blanked Midland 4-0 in Thursday's opener, the RockHounds, bolstered by the debut of Sean Manaea, helped themselves to a 4-0 victory Friday night at Security Bank Ballpark.
Acquired by Oakland in the Ben Zobrist trade with Kansas City on Tuesday, Manaea held Corpus Christi (19-16, 67-38) to three singles over seven innings of work. Danry Vazquez, who accounted for two of the hits, was caught stealing second base twice.
Manaea (1-1), who struck out nine on the night, teamed with Tucker Healy to register 15 consecutive outs to end the game.
Hooks starter Kyle Westwood (7-4) retired the first six Midland batters before Jaycob Brugman and Wade Kirkland singled to open the third. Following a double play, Chad Oberacker punched a base hit down the left-field line for a 1-0 Hounds lead.
In the fourth, Midland (23-12, 58-47) loaded the bases without surrendering an out. Brugman hit a soft grounder up the first-base line, allowing Nunez to score Midland's second run. Wade Kirkland then hit a chopper to third but Colin Moran fired home to retire Matt Olson. A fly ball ended the inning.
Back-to-back extra-base hits by Ryon Healy (double) and Jaycob Brugman (triple) led to two more tallies in the sixth, ending Westwood's night.
Aaron West worked one and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief. Reymin Guduan was perfect in the eighth, striking out two.
Edison Frias is slated to make his Double-A debut Saturday night. Midland turns to Chris Jensen (6-9, 5.68). First pitch 7:00.
