Salt Lake Gulls Come Out On Top
SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 1) - An Alfredo Marte three-run blast highlighted a five-run fifth inning that propelled the Salt Lake Gulls past the Sacramento River Cats, 6-4, on throwback night at Smith's Ballpark. The River Cats opened the scoring on Saturday in the first when Juan Perez knocked a solo homerun to put the visitors ahead. The two teams traded runs through the early innings before Gary Brown started the Bees fifth-inning charge with a lead-off walk. With the five-run rally, Salt Lake took its first lead of the ballgame and held on to secure the win.
Starter Alex Sanabia (2-10) pitched through six, allowing four runs off four hits and striking out five to claim his first victory as a starter. Ryan Verdugo chipped in a solid one and two-thirds scoreless relief innings before Cam Bedrosian closed out the ninth to earn his third save of the season. Kaleb Cowart went three-for-four on the night with a double and two runs scored, while Marte was two-for-three with three RBIs. Kyle Kubitza cracked his Pacific Coast League leading 35th double and Grant Green added his own two bagger to help the Bees to victory.
