Mobile Snuffs Out Jacksonville For 7-2 Victory
MOBILE, AL - The Mobile BayBears (21-13, 55-48) took the series finale over the Jacksonville Suns (12-23, 41-63) with a 7-2 win Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. The BayBears bested the Suns in the series, winning three of the five games played between to the two teams. With Saturday's win, Mobile remains in first place in the Southern League South Division Standings. The BayBears maintain a 1.5 game lead over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
Jacksonville struck first with a run in the first inning. Kenny Wilson and Carlos Lopez reached safely on back-to-back singles. Two batters later Zack Cox lined a two-out RBI base hit to right to put Jacksonville ahead 1-0.
Mobile tied the game in the bottom of the second frame when Garett Weber drew a one out walk and scored from first on a Rudy Flores RBI double, making it a 1-1 contest.
Mobile pushed ahead in the fourth inning. The BayBears worked the bases loaded and Weber drew a walk that pushed across the go-ahead run. With the bases still loaded, a wild pitch allowed another run to score making it 3-1 in favor of Mobile. The BayBears then capped the frame with a 4-1 advantage after a Ronnie Freeman RBI groundout.
The Suns cut the BayBears lead to just two runs in the fifth inning. Chadd Krist, scored on a RBI double from Wilson to make it a 4-2 score still in favor of Mobile.
The BayBears would pull away in the sixth inning. Flores powered out a two-run home run to lift the BayBears ahead 6-2 then Stewart Ijames followed two batters later with solo home run for the final 7-2 score in favor of Mobile.
BayBears RHP John Omahen (5-0) started the game and tossed six innings, allowing just two runs, both earned on nine hits while walking one and striking out four. Omahen's efforts on the mound awarded him with his fifth Double-A victory in six games started since being promoted from Advanced-A Visalia.
Suns starting RHP Austin Brice (3-8) fell for the eighth time in 2015. The righty surrendered seven runs, six of which were earned on six hits, walking four batters and striking out four. The save was credited to RHP Jake Barrett. The BayBears' righty earned his second save of the season after entering the game in the sixth inning with Mobile only up by two and Barrett threw three scoreless frames.
