Mets prospects Abreu, Malek slug Saguaros
Abreu, a 27-year-old Mets first baseman prospect who ripped 17 homers for Double-A Binghamton, went yard twice and plated five runs, giving him 12 RBIs for the season. In addition to a pair of two-run blasts, he forced in a run with a groundout in the first inning.
Malek's first homer of the Arizona Fall League season was a grand slam that capped an eight-run seventh. The Mets outfield prospect opened the decisive frame with a single and scored on Abreu's second homer to extend the lead to 7-4.
Malek capped the frame with his slam to right field off of Saguaros reliever Chris Key. The right fielder had two hits on the day and is batting .286 with eight RBIs.
Eric Patterson led off the bottom of the first with a homer and Scott Moore added a solo shot in the fourth for the Solar Sox (9-8), who have 20 homers in 16 games. Mesa trails league leader Scottsdale by one dinger.
Mark McLemore (2-0) replaced starter Kevin Slowey in the fourth and picked up the win. He allowed three runs -- two earned -- on two hits and three walks while fanning one. Brian Akin, Casey Hoorelbeke, Clay Rapada and Jonathan Meloan shut down Peoria (7-9) the rest of the way with a scoreless inning apiece.
Jeff Kennard (0-2) gave up the tiebreaker homer to Abreu in the fifth after relieving starter Stuart Pomeranz. Kennard went 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while fanning two.
After tossing a scoreless sixth, Kyle Kendrick gave up five runs on five hits in the seventh without recording an out. Key replaced him and yielded four runs -- three earned -- over the final two frames in the Saguaros' fifth straight loss.
