Report: Yankees promote Mateo to Tampa

Speedy shortstop headed to Florida State League with 71 steals in tow
August 5, 2015

Jorge Mateo was rumored to be on the move during the trade deadline talks of last week, and indeed, he is moving. He's just moving onwards in the Yankees system.

The Yankees are promoting their No. 3 prospect from Class A Charleston to Class A Advanced Tampa, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The 20-year-old shortstop has grabbed plenty of attention for his speed in his first full Minor League season. His 71 steals in 96 games with the RiverDogs is by far the largest total in the Minors, beating out second-place Johneshwy Fargas (55) by 16 thefts. Unsurprisingly, his speed score -- which takes into account steals, triples and runs scored -- was tops in the South Atlantic League at 8.7, ahead of fellow speedsters Eddy Alvarez (8.5) and Ozhaino Albies (8.0).

That speed has also suited Mateo well at shortstop, where he's expected to stick for the duration of his career thanks to his ability to cover ground. MLB.com also noted that his arm has become a plus tool during his four seasons in the Yankees system.

While Mateo's speed has stood out, his bat was more average at the Class A level before Wednesday's promotion. The Dominican Republic native, who signed for only $225,000 back in 2012, had a .268/.338/.378 line with two homers, eight triples and 18 doubles in 96 games. Including his time in the Dominican Summer and Gulf Coast Leagues, Mateo has a .274/.357/.405 career line in the Minors.

Still, the package is exciting enough that Mateo's name kept coming into trade discussions involving the Yankees' interest in Padres closer Craig Kimbrel, with the Padres continuing to ask for the young shortstop in their returning package for the flame-throwing right-hander. No deal was consummated, and now the right-handed hitter is moving up to the Class A Advanced level for the first time.

As Mateo moves up the chain, fellow shortstop and Yankees No. 11 prospect Tyler Wade is also getting the bump up to Double-A Trenton. The 20-year-old left-handed hitter had a .280/.349/.353 line with two homers, five triples, 11 doubles and 31 steals in 98 games in the FSL.
