Mateo zips through debut with Tampa
Jorge Mateo got up to speed in the Florida State League with the appropriate amount of haste he's been showing all season in the Minor Leagues.
After toiling Monday in the South Atlantic League, New York's No. 3 prospect collected four hits and scored twice in his Florida State League debut Wednesday night. Class A Advanced Tampa fell to Brevard County, 5-4, in 12 innings.
Mateo sprayed the ball all over the field -- singling to left field in the third inning, singling to right in the fifth and tripling to center in the ninth. His final hit was a single to third base in the 12th. That set up the 20-year-old shortstop's Minor League-leading 72nd stolen base and put him in position to score his second run of the game on a single by Dustin Fowler.
The Dominican Republic native made the jump to the FSL after compiling a .268/.338/.378 slash line in 96 South Atlantic League games with the Class A Charleston RiverDogs. All the while, he's compiled an 83 percent success rate on stolen bases.
For Mateo, 2015 has represented his first season in full-season ball. Held back by a fracture in his left arm in 2012 and a broken wrist last season, the 6-foot shortstop has provided a jolt to his club's offenses.
Fowler, the Yankees' No. 20 prospect, homered, drove in three runs and finished a triple short of the cycle while Miguel Andujar added two hits and an RBI for Tampa.
The club's No. 27 prospect, Jordan Montgomery, allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one over five innings, but did not figure into the decision. Luis Niebla fell to 1-5 after surrendering two runs on four hits while fanning two and issuing one walk over 2 1/3 frames.
Christopher McFarland hit a walk-off two-run double for the Manatees.
