Captains Lose 5-3, Swept by Loons
(Midland, MI)- The Loons J.T. Wise with a runner on first hit his second two-run homerun of the game to beat the Captains 5-3. Great Lakes swept Lake County with the win on Friday night.
The Captains scored first for the third time in the series taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Chris Kersten led things off with a double to deep centerfield. Chase Burnette walked to put two runners on. Greg Wilborn the Loons starter hit Greg Folgia with a pitch to load the bases. Dwight Childs drove in his fifth run of the year with a sacrifice fly to left.
In the third inning, Captains' starter Brett Brach walked Chris Jacobs and Rafael Ynoa. Nick Buss tried to bunt the runners over; Brach picked up the ball fired a strike to third to get the lead runner for the first out. Christen Lara hit a ground ball to third, Abraham picked it up tossed it to second for the second out and relay throw was in the dirt and got away from Carlson, the error allowed Ynoa to score to tie the game. J.T. Wise hit his eleventh homerun of the year, a two run homerun to give Great Lakes a 3-1 lead.
Lake County showed some grit in the fifth inning. Dwight Childs dropped a fly ball into a right field for a leadoff single. Delvi Cid chopped one up the middle to put two on. Argenis Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Adam Abraham ripped a double down the leftfield line to score both runners and tie the game at three.
The Loons' Je-Mo Lee (1-0) picked up the win working two scoreless innings in relief giving up a hit and striking out one. Steve Ames worked the final two frames striking out five for his 15th save of the year. Owen Dew (1-2) took the loss giving up two runs on four hits over three innings with three strike outs. Great Lakes' starter Wilborn went five innings and struck out ten Captains, the Loons combined to strike out 16 Captain hitters.
Lake County returns home to Classic Park for the final series of the regular season and will host Lansing at 7:00PM. The Captains will start RHP Jason Knapp (1-0) against the RHP Matt Fields (5-7) for the Lugnuts. The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, ESPN 970 WFUN and on the internet at captainsbaseball.com.
Lake County returns home on Saturday, September 4th at 7:00PM for a the final series of the 2010 regular season against the Lansing Lugnuts the Midwest League affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.
