Taglieri earns FSL Scholarship Award

Swiderski, Lopez, Dakin win Sunhong Min Scholarship
August 12, 2015

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Florida State League Scholarship Committee awarded 12 educational scholarships worth $1,500 each to every team in the FSL. Earning the scholarship for the St. Lucie Mets is Zach Taglieri.

Taglieri, a rising senior at Port St. Lucie High School, began working for the Mets at Tradition Field when he was 14. Zach has operated speed pitch, performed as Klutch the mascot, served as a bat boy and has held many other positions with the club over the last four years.

After pitching in his senior season for the Jaguars, Zach intends to go to college and play Division I baseball for The Citadel in South Carolina.

The FSL scholarship award is based both on financial need and grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students eligible for the award must be an employee of, or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club and must be at least a high school junior by the 2015 fall term.

The Miami Marlins have sponsored this program for 16 years and have contributed a total of $160,500.

"I am very proud of all the hard work the teams do with all the teams participating, and I congratulate all of the winners," FSL President Ken Carson said. "I want to thank the Miami Marlins for their continued support of this great program. They are a great partner."

Taglieri and the other scholarship winners will be guests of the Miami Marlins in pregame ceremonies on August 23 at Marlins Park.

In 2013, the Mets were lucky enough to have an intern by the name of Sunhong Min, who reached out to them asking for an experience to learn.

Min said, "If you could give me an opportunity to learn something valuable, I would do my best. I just need an experience."

Sunhong Min made such an impression on everyone in our organization including the fans and team with his infectious smile and laughter. He was always so happy and full of life. The recipient of the scholarship will possess similar characteristics and attributes that Sunhong Min displayed while working with the Mets here in Port St. Lucie.

The Mets are proud to recognize this year's recipients of the Sunhong Min scholarship. Each of the winners of the Sunhong Min scholarship has worked for the St. Lucie Mets throughout their high school years, if not longer. The co-winners of the Sunhong Min scholarship are:

-Matt Swiderski, a graduate of Port St. Lucie High. He will be attending Daytona State College in the fall to play baseball and will major in Sport Management.
