Nationals Outfielder Reed Johnson Assigned to Potomac for Rehab Stint
Woodbridge, VA--The Washington Nationals announce today that veteran OF Reed Johnson has been sent to the Potomac Nationals for a rehabilitation assignment while he recovers from a left calf strain he suffered at the end of April.
Johnson, 38, a 13-year Major League veteran, will join Potomac today when they take on the Winston-Salem Dash in a 12:05 pm rubber match at Pfitzner Stadium.
Johnson was placed on the 15-day disabled list by Washington on April 29th after legging out a pinch hit double in Atlanta in which he heard "a big pop" in his left foot area that ultimately ended in minor foot surgery on Saturday May 2nd to repair a damaged tendon.
Prior to landing on the disabled list Johnson appeared in 12 games for Washington going 4-for-18 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and five strikeouts before the injury sidelined the right-handed hitting outfielder.
Washington inked the veteran to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training on March 30th after the Miami Marlins released him. Johnson is a career .279 hitter in 13 Major League seasons spanning six different ball clubs (Toronto, Chicago-NL, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami and Washington). He's suited up in 1,315 games and scored 518 runs, along with 215 doubles, 23 triples, 65 home runs, 407 RBIs, 181 walks and 41 stolen bases.
Johnson was originally a Toronto Blue Jays draft pick in the 17th round of the 1999 MLB draft (523rd overall) and debuted with the Jays in 2003, suiting up in 114 games and batting .294 (121-for-412).
The Washington Nationals have not announced a time table for Johnson's rehab assignment with Potomac.
