Wednesday's Hawaii Winter Baseball recap
Waikiki BeachBoys 2, North Shore Honu 0
Launch Gameday
Ching-Lung Lo allowed just one hit over five shutout innings as the Waikiki BeachBoys blanked the visiting North Shore Honu, 2-0, on Wednesday.
Lo (3-2), a Colorado Rockies prospect who went 10-5 for the Class A Advanced Modesto Nuts this past season, struck out nine and issued just one walk. Alexander Hinshaw (Giants) followed with two scoreless frames, while Andrew Johnston (Rockies) pitched around two hits in the ninth inning and picked up his third save.
The BeachBoys (14-12) got on the board in the fourth when Seattle farmhand Sebastien Boucher walked to lead off the frame and eventually scored on Mark Minicozzi's sacrifice fly.
Minicozzi, who's contending for the Hawaii Winter Baseball Triple Crown, doubled to lead off the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly by Reed Eastley (Mariners).
Keisuke Hayashi (1-1) took the tough-luck loss for the Honu (12-12), allowing a run on three hits over five innings. The 19-year-old's 1.44 ERA is tied for second-best in the league.
West Oahu CaneFires 10, Honolulu Sharks 4
Launch Gameday
John Otness went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored to lead the West Oahu CaneFires to a 10-4 win over the visiting Honolulu Sharks on Wednesday.
Otness, a Boston prospect who spent this past season with the Class A Advanced Wilmington Blue Rocks, put the CaneFires (14-12) on the board with a solo homer in the second inning. The 25-year-old backstop also singled and scored in the fourth.
John Mayberry Jr. (Rangers) and Brian McFall (Royals) each drove in two runs for West Oahu, while Yasushi Iihara went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Royals farmhand Gilbert de la Vara (2-0) earned the win, allowing an unearned run on two hits over 2 1/3 innings while striking out three. Starter Ian Kennedy, the Yankees' 2006 first-round draft pick, surrendered two runs on three hits over 3 2/3 innings while striking out six.
Hisashi Kawata, Van Pope (Braves), Yoshiyuki Kamei and Atsushi Ugumori drove in a run apiece for the Sharks (11-15).
Kanehisa Arime (4-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits over 3 1/3 innings. Despite the subpar outing, the 28-year-old right-hander leads the league in wins and innings pitched (39), while his 2.31 ERA ranks fifth. Bruce Gallaway (Orioles) was touched up for five runs over just 1 1/3 innings.
