Wings rally to beat RailRiders
Reynaldo Rodriguez homered to key a seventh inning rally, backing a solid start by Michael Bowden in a 3-2 Red Wings win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Saturday night at Frontier Field. A season-high crowd of 12,127 enjoyed a beautiful summer night at the ballpark.

The Wings' Bowden opposed Kyle Davies in a match-up of veteran right-handers. Davies made three straight starts against the Wings on June 6, 11, and 17 - winning two of those three starts.
Bowden allowed a lead-off double to Ben Gamel to open the game, then set down the next six batters. Bowden was helped by a running catch by Xavier Avery in right field, crashing into the right field fence but hanging onto the ball to rob Cole Figueroa of an extra-base hit.
Byron Buxton knocked a two-out base hit in the third to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Buxton has hit safely in all ten of his games since joining the Red Wings on August 7. A few pitches later, Buxton got caught stealing to end the inning.
After surrendering the lead-off double in the first, Bowden settled into a groove, retiring 15 out of the next 16 batters he faced. Through five innings, he struck out six batters, five in the third and fourth innings.
The Wings looked like they were going to be the first to score in the fifth inning, as Avery launched a ball deep to left field, but a perfectly timed catch by Slade Heathcott over the left field wall robbed Avery of the home run, and the Wings of the potential lead.
Davies did his best to keep pace with Bowden, as he allowed only two hits and struck out four through five innings.
The gloves continued to steal the show in the sixth inning. Rodriguez chased down a ball hit deep to left center by Ben Gamel to make the acrobatic over the shoulder catch. The grab helped Bowden to continue his dominant performance, as he retired his eleventh straight batter to end the sixth.
Buxton reached first on a two-out infield single in the sixth inning, then moved to second on a wild pitch by Davies. James Beresford flied out to strand Buxton, and play moved to the seventh inning.
The RailRiders put a runner of their own with two outs in the top of the seventh, when Aaron Judge singled off Bowden - the first base runner allowed by Bowden since the third inning. Heathcott followed with a double over Buxton's head, with Judge coming around to score and give Scranton a 1-0 lead. An RBI single followed to make it 2-0, as for the second straight night the RailRiders used a productive seventh inning to take the lead.
The Wings came into the bottom half of the inning ready to strike back. Rodriguez led off the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to one. Kennys Vargas followed up with a base hit, and two batters later, a fielding error landed Vargas at third, and Avery at second with one out. Davies exited the game after the one out error, and was replaced by Branden Pinder. Argenis Diaz was the next batter up, and he sent a deep sacrifice fly to center field to score Vargas and tie the game. During the next at bat, a balk by Pinder scored Avery from third, and the Wings took a 3-2 lead.
Davies (8-7) pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned), with no walks and four strikeouts. He threw 86 pitches, 57 for strikes.
Mark Hamburger took over for Bowden (9-3) to start the eighth inning. Bowden allowed five hits and two earned runs over seven innings, with one walk and eight strikeouts. Bowden threw 101 pitches, 69 for strikes.
Hamburger struck out Judge to open the ninth, allowed a single, then Aaron Thompson took over on the mound. Thompson got a ground out and fly out to earn his first save.

1988 - Pitcher Bob Milacki allowed only three hits and one earned run in a complete game 2-1 victory over the Mud Hens in Toledo. The win was Milacki's 11th of the season.
1952 - The first 9-inning perfect game in the International League in 42 years is turned in by Buffalo's Dick Marlowe in a game at Baltimore. The future Detroit Tiger needs only 84 pitches to retire 27 consecutive Oriole batters. The game, a 2-0 Bisons victory, takes just 97 minutes to complete, but the suspense is too much for one man to take. Buffalo announcer Bill Mazer, who is recreating the game via Western Union, looks ahead on his tape and shouts, "It's a perfect game! It's a perfect game!" Marlowe enjoys his finest day as a Bison during an up-and-down season in which he went 10-10 with a 4.01 ERA for the 5th-place Buffalo club. His historic performance is the IL's first 9-inning perfect game since Buffalo's Chester Carmichael defeated Jersey City 1-0 on August 9, 1910, and the last during the 20th century.
