Thurman promoted, Bywater added and Whalen placed on DL

The Braves promoted Andrew Thurman to Mississippi

ZEBULON, NC - The Atlanta Braves announced today several player transactions including three affecting the Carolina Mudcats active roster. Today's moves included the placement of RHP Rob Whalen on the disabled list, the transfer of RHP Andrew Thurman from Carolina to Mississippi and the assignment or recent free agent signing LHP Matt Bywater to Carolina.

In summary:

8/13 - RHP Rob Whalen placed on disabled list (retro to 8/11).

8/13 - RHP Andrew Thurman transferred from Carolina to Mississippi.

8/13 - LHP Matt Bywater signed as free agent and sent to Carolina.

The Mudcats roster is currently at 24 active players with five on the disabled list.

Whalen, 21, was 1-2 with a 3.29 ERA over three starts with Carolina before being placed on the disabled list. He was recently acquired by the Braves as part of a trade with the New York Mets and was assigned to Carolina upon arriving to the organization.

Thurman, 23, pitched to a 3.77 ERA over 11 starts this season for the Mudcats before his promotion. He last pitched on August 8 against the Potomac Nationals at Five County Stadium and suffered a loss after allowing six runs on eight hits over six innings pitched. He was 4-2 with a 2.41 ERA over six first half starts and 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA over five second half starts this season with the Mudcats. All six of his first half starts came before the bus accident in mid-May. He missed close to two months after being placed on the disabled list immediately following the accident.

Bywater, 26, was signed out of the Independent Frontier League and most recently pitched with the Southern Illinois Miners. He will wear jersey number 38 and is expected to start for the Mudcats on Friday night in Frederick.

The Carolina Mudcats are the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The 2015 "Braves New World" season is the first for the Mudcats as an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and their fourth straight in the historic Carolina League. First established in 1991, the Carolina Mudcats are in their 25th straight season of baseball at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C.
