Cahill joins Iowa, Edwards Jr. placed on DL

LAS VEGAS - The Chicago Cubs today made a series of moves affecting Iowa's active roster for tonight's series finale against Las Vegas at Cashman Field. Right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill signed a minor league deal with Chicago and has been assigned to Iowa, and right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. has been placed on the 7-Day disabled list.

Cahill, 27, began the season with the Atlanta Braves and went 0-3 with a 7.52 ERA (22ER/26.1IP) and 14 strikeouts in 15 games, including three starts. He was released by Atlanta June 20.

The right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 2. After one-game tune-ups in Rookie ball and Advanced-A, he was assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City where he went 1-3 with a 6.28 ERA (20ER/28.2IP) in six starts. He opted out of his contract with Los Angeles Aug. 14.

Cahill was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the second round of the 2006 June draft out of Vista (CA) High School. He has major league experience with three organizations. In addition to the Braves, the Oceanside, CA native made 96 starts with the A's from 2009-11 and appeared in 90 games and made 74 starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2012-14. In total, Cahill is 64-72 with a 4.16 ERA (493ER/1066.2IP) in seven big league seasons.

Edwards Jr., 23, is 3-1 with a 3.03 ERA (10ER/29.2IP) and two saves for in 21 games for Iowa this season. The righty has struck out 37 and walked 24. He joined the I-Cubs May 29 after going 2-2 with a 2.66 ERA (7ER/23.2IP) and 36 strikeouts to 17 walks in 13 games for Double-A Tennessee to begin the season.

With these moves, Iowa's active roster is full at 25 players plus one player on the inactive list and two players on the disabled list.
