Field of Dreams: CCPAL
CORPUS CHRISTI - Since 2003, the Corpus Christi Police Athletic League (CCPAL) has provided young people with a viable alternative to temptations of the street. The program is open to all young people in the community and activities are supervised by police officers and other volunteers.
The number of baseball-playing kids has grown from 435 to over 1,600.
CCPAL recently acquired two new fields near the intersection of Agnes and Baldwin, one of which has been targeted by the Hooks Field of Dreams program this off-season.
The Hooks grounds crew, led by field superintendent Izzy Hinojosa, will tackle the project along with field maintenance and equipment vendors and volunteers.
"There is a lot of need at that site," Hooks general manager Michael Wood said. "The weeds can swallow up a six-footer, so obviously the playing surface needs lots of attention. New fencing around the entire perimeter is necessary.
"When things dry out around here, we'll be able to get going."
CCPAL is supported by contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations. All instruction and equipment are provided at no cost.
The Hooks Field of Dreams initiative began in 2006. Four years ago, Robstown Little League was the first beneficiary. Over the last three years, Corpus Christi's Miracle League Field for the developmentally disabled has been the focus.
