McBroom, Torres highlight MWL All-Stars

Lansing first baseman/DH, South Bend shortstop take top honors
August 24, 2015

Most Valuable Player Ryan McBroom and Prospect of the Year Gleyber Torres headlined the Midwest League's list of end-of-season honorees, announced Monday.

McBroom, a 15th-round pick by the Blue Jays last year, leads the Class A circuit with a .324 average, 38 doubles and .894 OPS for Lansing and ranks among the top three in RBIs (82, second), OBP (.395, second), slugging percentage (.499, second) and hits (135, third). Because of those impressive numbers, the 23-year-old slugger was picked at both the first base and DH spots on the MWL's All-Star team, as selected by the 16 field managers in the league. He becomes the third Lugnut to win MVP, following in the footsteps of Brian Dopirak (2004) and Kevin Pillar (2012).

With a breakout 2015 campaign, Torres jumped from being considered the No. 7 prospect in the Cubs' system by MLB.com at the start of the 2015 season all the way to the top spot, following the recent graduation of Kyle Schwarber. The young shortstop, who doesn't turn 19 until December, is hitting .296/.357/.390 with three homers, five triples, 22 doubles, 61 RBIs and 22 steals in 112 games during his first full season of Minor League ball. Those numbers, along with his work in the field, have pushed the Venezuela native up to No. 32 in MLB.com's ranking of top 100 overall prospects after starting the year outside the top 100.

Cardinals affiliate Peoria leads the way with three players honored by the Midwest League on Monday. Second baseman Darren Seferina (.282 average, .778 OPS, league-leading 11 triples, 22 steals) was the Chiefs' representative among position players while left-handed starter Austin Gomber (14-3, 2.79 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 132 strikeouts in 129 innings) and right-handed reliever Kyle Grana (20 saves, 0.90 ERA) were selected as pitchers.

Josh Bonifay was named the Manager of the Year after leading Quad Cities to a league-best 79-44 record as of Monday. The River Bandits captured the Western Division's first-half title with a 45-23 record.
