Kinsey picking up steam at latest stop
Chris Kinsey (Bears 2003) became quite the traveler this season. The right-handed Diamondbacks prospect started the season in Class A Advanced Lancaster and earned a promotion a month into the season after not allowing an earned run in six outings.
Kinsey was effective for Double-A Tennessee, going 2-2 with five saves and a 3.76 ERA. He also appeared in one game for Triple-A Tucson. Most recently, Kinsey was unhittable in two outings for Scottsdale of the Arizona Fall League. He struck out two in three hitless innings to pick up the win on Nov. 9 against the Saguaros. He followed that with two perfect innings against Phoenix on Nov. 14.
Kinsey and six other Diamondbacks prospects are playing for the Scorpions. Here's how they fared from Nov. 9-15 in the Arizona Fall League:
IF James D'Antona (Bears 2003) -- D'Antona went 2-for-4 and hit his second home run of the season on Nov. 9 against the Saguaros. The two-hit game was his second straight and raised his batting average to a season-high .242. He went 1-for-4 with a double the next day to extend his hit streak to four games.
RHP Matt Elliott -- After pitching well for most of the season, Elliott hasn't been able to break out of his recent struggles. He managed to escape a jam against the Saguaros on Nov. 10 after giving up two hits and a walk. He wasn't as lucky against Mesa on Nov. 15, permitting two runs on two hits and a walk in one inning to raise his ERA to 10.64.
2B Mark Reynolds (Bears 2004) -- Reynolds had another big day, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs on Nov. 9 against the Saguaros. A 2-for-4 performance the next night lifted his average to .364, its highest point since Reynolds was at .370 on Oct. 19.
2B Danny Richar -- Richar belted his second home run of the season on Nov. 9 against the Saguaros. He went 1-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored in the game. Richar also went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Nov. 14 against Phoenix.
RHP Steven Jackson (Bears 2004) -- Jackson had his second straight solid start, giving up one run on five hits in four innings against the Saguaros on Nov. 13. Jackson struck out four and walked one while lowering his ERA to 7.11. He's allowed two runs over eight innings in his last two starts.
RHP Mike Schultz (Bears 2003) -- Schultz was almost perfect in two appearances. He struck out two and walked one without giving up a hit in 1 2/3 innings to pick up the win against Grand Canyon on Nov. 11. Schultz also surrendered just one hit in two innings and struck out four against Mesa on Nov. 15.
There are also three Diamondbacks prospects playing Hawaii Winter Baseball for the West Oahu CaneFires. Here's how they fared between Nov. 9-15:
RHP Kyler Newby (Bears 2005) -- Newby was overpowering against Waikiki on Nov. 10. He allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk. He also threw his fourth wild pitch of the season. Newby gave up a run to North Shore in one inning on Nov. 15, but he struck out two more to give him 27 in 18 1/3 innings.
C Josh Ford (Bears 2005) -- Ford has not seen action since going 1-for-2 against Honolulu and raising his batting average to a season-high .262 on Nov. 7.
OF Chris Rahl (Bears 2005) -- Rahl has been slumping, but he did go 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored against North Shore on Nov. 14. An 0-for-4 performance the next day dropped his average to .208.
Mexican League
3B Brian Barden (Bears 2002) -- Barden continued to see his average tumble, but was surprisingly productive at the same time. He went 3-for-23 in six games, but managed to score seven runs and drive in four. He hit his eighth home run, a solo shot, on Nov. 12, and he went 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored the next day.
1B Jesus Cota -- Cota went 6-for-18 with two home runs in six games. He hit solo dingers on Nov. 9 and Nov. 14, giving him six homers and 17 RBIs this season.
IF Agustin Murillo -- Murillo had a big day, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored on Nov. 14. He followed that up by going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI the following day.
RHP Jonathan Castellanos (Bears 2001) -- Castellanos earned his second win of the season, pitching six innings and yielding three runs on six hits on Nov. 10. Castellanos is now 2-0 with a 7.89 ERA.
2B Matt Kata -- Kata went 6-for-20 and blasted two home runs with four RBIs in four games. After going homerless over his final 21 Triple-A games, Kata has hit six roundtrippers in 30 Mexican Winter League contests.
Venezuelan Winter League
IF Javier Brito -- Brito went 0-for-2 with a walk in three plate appearances last week. He drew a walk as a pinch-hitter on Nov. 12, and he is batting .250 in 13 games.
2B Alberto Callaspo -- Callaspo hit his second home run of the season, a solo blast on Nov. 12. He had consecutive 1-for-3 games, which raised his batting average to .232, the highest it's been since Oct. 29.
SS Alberto Gonzalez -- Despite having hits in five of his last six games, Gonzalez actually saw his batting average dip below .300 last week. He went 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored on Nov. 13 to put him at .293.
OF Carlos Gonzalez (Bears 2004) -- Gonzalez extended his hit streak to eight games. He's had three multi-hit games in that span, raising his batting average from .265 to .325.
C Miguel Montero -- Montero put together a five-game hit streak to raise his batting average from .269 to .296. Montero went 2-for-4 with a walk and a two-run home run -- his first dinger of the season -- on Nov. 9.
RHP Jesus Silva -- Silva had, by far, his best start of the season on Nov. 10, when he gave up four hits over seven scoreless innings to pick up his first win. Silva struck out four and walked one in his only scoreless start of the season.
Dominican Winter League
1B Chris Carter (Bears 2004) -- Carter did not see any game action last week. He hasn't played since going 1-for-2 with two RBIs on Oct. 20.
LHP Evan MacLane -- MacLane did not see any game action last week. He has been sidelined since giving up four unearned runs in a loss on Oct. 31.
