Ducks Back in the Win Column

Summary
Akron's Nellie Rodriguez crushed a two-run homer, and right-hander D.J. Brown earned his first Double-A win, as the RubberDucks claimed a 5-3 victory over the Trenton Thunder Wednesday afternoon at Arm and Hammer Park.
 
Turning Point
The RubberDucks (67-63) snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth inning against Thunder starter Matt Wotherspoon (1-1). Bryson Myles was hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second and third. He scored on a wild pitch to give Akron a 3-2 lead. After a walk to Carlos MoncriefNellie Rodriguez blasted a long homer to left field, his fourth of the year, to extend the lead to 5-2.
 
Mound Presence
Brown (1-2) worked into the sixth inning and allowed three earned runs for the victory, his first at the Double-A level. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. He surrendered a pair of solo homers, including one to Trenton's Rob Segedin with one out in the sixth to make it 5-3. That was his final hitter of the day. Lefty Nick Maronde came on and fanned five hitters in his 1 2/3 innings. Josh Martin set-up Jeff Johnson with a scoreless eighth, and Johnson closed the game in the ninth for his 23rd save.
 
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Eric Stamets and Justin Toole.  Toole finished 2-4 on the day. Nellie Rodriguez was also 2-4, adding a single to go along with his homer.
 
Notes
The win snapped Akron's seven-game losing streak…The Ducks finished 7-5 in the season-series against the Thunder (67-62)…There are 12 games left to play in the regular season, and the RubberDucks are 2 ½ games out of the wild card spot in the EL West, pending the outcome of the Altoona-Reading game on Wednesday night…Time of game: 2:40…Attendance: 3,841.
